Travel & Tourism

Ever wanted to discover the amazing world in which we live? In Travel and Tourism we will explore the tourism industry in both the UK and the rest of the world. During the course pupils will research a range of different holiday destinations from the coastlines of the UK to New York and beyond.

The Travel and Tourism industry is one of the largest in the UK and of major importance around the world.  This course explores issues that exist in the tourism sector which have an impact on the holiday’s people book. Studying Travel and Tourism helps pupils develop skills that are essential in both further education and the world of work such as; teamwork, individual enquiry, communication, numerical skills, presentation, ICT and organisation skills.

What does the qualification cover?

BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism (2022) 

There are 3 units to complete: 2 internally assessed components and 1 exam component. 

  • 60% Internal assessment 
  • 40% External assessment 

At KS4 students can choose to study as an option subject the BTEC Tech Award in Travel and Tourism. The course gives students the opportunity to develop applied knowledge and understanding in a range of areas. Taking this qualification, students will study 3 components, this includes 1 external assessment (exam) and 2 internal assessments covering the following content areas: 

Component 1: Travel and Tourism Organisations and Destinations (internal assessment) 

Students investigate the aims of travel and tourism organisations, how different organisations work together and types of travel and tourism, the features that make destinations appealing to visitors and different travel routes 

Component 2: Customer Needs in Travel and Tourism (internal assessment) 

Students investigate how organisations use market research to identify travel and tourism trends, and customer needs and preferences, and selection of products and services and planning a holiday to meet customer needs and preferences 

Component 3: Influences on Global Travel and Tourism (external assessment) 

Students explore different factors that may influence global travel and tourism, and how travel and tourism organisations and destinations respond to these factors.  Students examine the potential impacts of tourism on global destinations and how destinations can manage the impacts of tourism and control tourism development to achieve sustainable tourism. 

Students will develop their awareness of: 

The aims, products and services of different travel and tourism organisations, their use of consumer technologies, the features of tourist destinations, how organisations meet customer needs and preferences, and the influences on global travel and tourism.
